Many suppliers want to help you securing access to Your old business systems, by migrating the data to their storage system. It seems cost effective initially, not having to pay any yearly invoices for obsolete systems, but still, it requires the need to invest time and money in order to move the data to another system in an accurate manner. Also, the investment is often not easy definable from the start, as the consumed time tends to increase when the inventory of collectable metadata from that legacy system has started, and a migration from one format to another may take substantial time as the process becomes more complex than initially expected.
At Olmia, we use two different approaches, and a combination of both whenever eligible.
The first alternative is the more ‘standard’ way, e.g. if adequate metadata is available, we can migrate the metadata and the corresponding records to our solution, according to the client’s needs.
The second option; in the event of the client’s metadata not being easily available or partially un-complete, instead of adapting data from one format to another and developing a specific export functionality, we automatically index everything through our full-text indexing service. The customer may then choose the desired metadata from that data set, or even easier, just search within the migrated volume by using free-text. Just as with any standard web-search browser, but in this case, the search is done solely within that specific storage volume. Just by knowing the approximate data-volume of the old system, the project is easily calculated in beforehand and the client has the possibility of searching for specific words and/or phrases within the volume that holds that old legacy data.
No additional, unforeseen costs apply as the service is already a part of the package and it works fully independently, regardless of what specific system needs to be migrated.
At Olmia we believe this approach sets us apart from other providers, enabling us to successfully offer specific methods to individual challenges.
